Save Jackson Heights Art Studio
We’re Fighting for Our Pottery Studio & Our Community
**UPDATE: Jackson Heights was partially restored in the 2025 budget thanks to your support. Stay tuned for what’s next.
The City of Lynchburg is proposing budget cuts that would eliminate funding for Jackson Heights Art Studio. If this goes through, our neighborhood pottery studio will be forced to close. The new 2026 Budget takes effect July 1, 2025. We must act fast!
This isn’t just about clay — it’s about connection, creativity, and keeping community art alive.

Dear [ Name],
I am writing to express my deep sadness and frustration regarding the proposed closure of Jackson Heights Art Studio in the FY 2026 budget.
This studio is more than just a room with art supplies—it’s a pillar of creativity, healing, and connection in our community. For many children, teens, and adults, Jackson Heights is the only place they can safely explore their imagination, build confidence, and experience the joy of making something meaningful.
Under the leadership of Brandi Shirlen, the studio has grown in extraordinary ways. She’s elevated the quality of programming, strengthened the teaching staff, updated materials, and streamlined operations. Participation has increased, and the studio is more efficient and impactful than ever.
To remove a space like this—one that nurtures mental health, self-expression, and community resilience—would be short-sighted and deeply damaging. Budget cuts shouldn’t come at the cost of our city’s cultural and emotional wellbeing.
I respectfully urge you to:
Continue funding Jackson Heights through FY2026 to allow time for alternatives
Support a working group to explore community partnerships or sustainable funding
Recognize the value this space brings to Lynchburg’s residents beyond the numbers
This is a community willing to show up, fundraise, volunteer, and advocate. Please give us the chance to do that—and help preserve this vital resource for generations to come.
Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]
[Optional: Your neighborhood, organization, or role]

Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m a Lynchburg resident calling to urge you to keep Jackson Heights Art Studio open.
This space is a vital part of our community—it provides affordable, inclusive art classes that support mental health, creativity, and connection.
Please don’t cut funding. We need more places like Jackson Heights, not fewer. Thank you for your time.

Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I live in [Your Neighborhood or Zip Code]. I’m calling because I’m deeply concerned about the proposed closure of Jackson Heights Art Studio in the upcoming budget.
This studio has become a cornerstone of our community—it offers affordable classes, supports mental health, and brings people of all ages together. Under Brandi Shirlen’s leadership, it’s grown in participation and impact. It would be devastating to lose it.
I strongly urge you to continue funding Jackson Heights through FY2026 so the community can help explore long-term solutions. We’re ready to support, fundraise, and collaborate—but we need time.
Please protect this space and vote to keep it open. Thank you so much for listening.
